Unique Rattan Chair from Abie Abdillah
Doeloe Lounge Chair and pretzels Bench was designed by young designers Abie Abdillah in Jakarta, Indonesia. Abie Abdillah live in a city already crowded and busy, it makes him often shocked to see new buildings, apartments, and malls are built quickly today in Jakarta. That’s why he made that took a piece of furniture that can resemble the time. And this is why “doeloe recliner” was created. This design is inspired by designs from the “Oplet” (modified from Morris or Austin van design), public transportation vehicles used in Jakarta in the 1930′s to 1979. Rattan is a unique material which mainly come from Southeast Asia, mainly from Indonesia, which claimed 70% of world demand for rattan material derived from domestic resources alone. Why unique rattan? Rattan as a plant can grow more than 100 meters long and has 400 different types of species that only about 8% of those who have explored and used as raw materials for the products of human needs. Another uniqueness of Rattan is a characteristic of the material itself, strong, and can bend. But it is difficult to make furniture from rattan material, because it makes them stretchy characters should have different support braces to keep furniture solid and steady. And to make furniture from modular form derived from rattan material continuous line, is my concern when creating a “pretzel Bench”. Pretzel shape was taken because it has the form of continuous line and looped a rope tie. “Pretzels Bench” is intended to demonstrate the most unique characteristics of the material of rattan, which is a “stretchy and can be bent” character.
